Sustainability is nothing new. It is just the mirror side of what was called vanity (vanitas) in the 17th century. But we chose to emphasize the good part – nature, wellbeing, forever young – instead of focussing on the inevitable death all living beings awaits. We seem to be an optimistic generation.
